controlling dreams article 5

In this article we’ll continue outlining the tips and tricks that can shake your awareness into the fact that you are dreaming (aka becoming lucid!)

Note that some of these require a certain degree of awareness, so please review the first few articles if you have skipped ahead or happened upon this first.  Developing your skills for controlling dreams requires you to build a toolkit of techniques.

A terrific device and one of our favorites is to attempt to remember how you got to where you are in a dream.

This can be a real mind-bender, and the attempt itself can raise your awareness to cross the appropriate threshold where you gain full lucidity.

In waking life, of course, you can easily piece together how you got somewhere. The trick is that we do not often think like this in waking life, so as with many practices discussed on this site, doing it consistently in waking life will help you start doing it in the dream state.

It’s quite simple and takes under 30 seconds. As an example:

How’d I get to the store? I drove

When did I first get in the car? In my garage

What did I do before going into the garage? Put the dogs in their crates.

What was I doing before that? Writing my shopping list.

As you can see, this is very simple and mundane. However, try doing this in a dream. Much like reading consistently, you cannot! Again,  controlling dreams begins with first realizing that you are dreaming! If you cannot remember how you got where you are, then that is a major dream sign.

Another thing that typically does not work the way it should in the dream state?: The Mirror!

Without trying to sound like a broken record, again, the great thing about this is that it’s so easy to practice in real life. Every time you look in a mirror in waking life, you can do a quick state test.

If you ever see a mirror in a dream, you can rest assured that you will not see a stable and accurate image if you stare into it.

This is where our explorations in controlling dreams can get very trippy! People have reported seeing different versions of themselves, aged or younger versions of themselves, or entirely different people/things all together when they stare into dream mirrors…

Developing a strong consciousness is your greatest means to mastering dream lucidity and control.
